The Bungaloom story begins in 2009, with the opening of New Living in Houston’s Rice Village district.
Native Houstonian and serial entrepreneur Jeff Kaplan suspected that his mother’s health problems could be related to the hundreds of toxic chemicals that exist in the building materials and furniture in modern homes.
AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH, HE FOUND A HANDFUL OF MANUFACTURERS OF ORGANIC MATTRESSES AND PAINT, AND OPENED A SMALL SHOP IN HOUSTON TO SELL THEIR WARES.
At the time, there were only a few other retailers like this in the United States. New Living found its niche in Houston, but the majority of organic mattresses on the market cost several thousand dollars. Jeff and his partners believed that everyone had a right to healthy sleep, and longed to create a more accessible toxin-free mattress. Maybe - they thought - they could even sell them online.
The mattress company sat on the back burner for a number of years while the founders opened public spaces, bars, juiceries and yoga studios to enrich their hometown of Houston.
Meanwhile, venture capital poured into mattress-slinging startups on the East and West coasts. In 2017, Jeff purchased a cluster of 1890’s bungalows in Houston’s historic East End, with plans to create a micro-hotel. The hotel rooms would, of course, need mattresses. Inspired by the simple, functional architecture of the historic bungalows, which were designed for maximum ventilation in a time before central air conditioning, Jeff and some friends riffed on the name of the dwellings.
Armed with a name, they felt it was finally time to launch their mattress company. After two years of manufacturing, prototyping and testing, we’re proud to present Bungaloom.
We believe that everyone has the right to a good night’s sleep that’s more connected to the natural environment and less connected to man-made chemicals. We also believe in the power of thoughtful businesses to enrich communities. Most “bed-in-a box” brands spend millions of dollars a year shipping mattresses to the United States from overseas and then disposing of the ones that customers return. To make our business more sustainable, we’ve elected to focus on our hometown of Houston and build nap pods and micro-hotels where you can try a Bungaloom mattress before you buy it. If you decide to purchase a Bungaloom mattress, we’ll throw in a few additional perks from our favorite local businesses - instead of spending hundreds of dollars to serve you annoying Facebook ads. We’re trying to sleep - and live - differently. And we hope you’ll join us.
-Cheers, Team Bungaloom
Our tree-foam based mattresses are made in the second ward of Houston with GOLS certified Organic Latex, All Natural Wool, and Texas-made GOTS certified organic cotton and pocketed coils.
Our mattress contain no polyurethane based memory foam or synthetic foam of any kind. Instead of toxic chemical flame retardants, we use All Natural Wool. In fact, mattresses like ours were illegal to sell until about 20 years ago when the U.S. government accepted wool as a natural alternative to flame retardants. To this day, chemical companies have lobbied extensively for chemical flame retardants to remain in nearly all American mattresses. Instead of toxic chemical flame retardants, we use All Natural Wool. We chose to exclusively use natural materials in our mattresses because we believe everyone has the right to a clean night’s sleep. But sleeping on a bed of natural fibers is also much better for the hot, humid Gulf Coast climate. Heat and humidity lead most mattresses to “off-gas” more harmful chemicals into your body when you sleep. With Bungaloom, you can sleep easy knowing that the only things being emitted from your mattress are naturally-occurring.
